Applications of Macleaya Cordata Extract
Macleaya cordata(Bo Luo Hui ) is a type of bloodroot plant with thousand of years in Chinese traditional medicinal. This plant has 13 kinds of alkaloids, mainly containing sanguinarine and chelerythrine, which have various pharmacological effects, including antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, insecticidal, detumescence and detoxification. Macleaya cordata extract (MCE) is a natural environmental-free green product and contains a mixture of quaternary benzo phenanthridine alkaloids (QBAs) including sanguinarine (SG), chelerythrine (CH), and protopine. These alkaloids have antimicrobial, antifungal, adrenolytic, sympatholytic, immunomodulatory [2, 3] and antioxidant properties. It has good antimicrobial, antioxidant and immune regulation properties and commonly used in the treatment of furuncle, abscess, malignant boil, ulcer, scald and intractable tinea.
Macleaya cordata extract is an antibiotic for animal nutrition
Despite their high efficacy in treatment of various diseases, the use of antibiotics is being discouraged by the public and some scientific communities. Hence, researchers are seeking natural alternatives to antibiotics. Macleaya cordata sanguinarine and chelerythrine offer have antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and immunomodulatory properties. In a study, macleaya cordata extract inhibited the growth of gram positive bacteria in vitro. This bacteriostastic activity was stronger than berberine, which is widely used in antibiotics. In addition, it can be used as a disinfectant for animals, which can inhibit the growth of diplococcus pneumonlae in rabbits, and can also be used for treating lobar pneumonia, acute quinsy tonsillitis, tympanitis, and tumor of the thyroid. Macleaya cordata has been proven to be an effective antibiotic in several research studies. It can be used as an alternative to antibiotics in animal agriculture and has been shown to have beneficial effects on broiler chickens, pigs, ruminants and fish.
Macleaya cordata extract is for pig
Macleaya cordata extract was mainly applied to weaned piglets, growing pigs, and sows in late gestation and lactation stage. Dietary supplementation with MCE improved growth performance, immunity, antioxidant capacity, intestinal morphology and microflora in weaned piglets. Specifically, it has been shown to be effective against Salmonella typhimurium, Staphylococcus aureus, and Yersinia enterocolitica in pigs (Jeroch et al. 2009). Moreover, MCE had no genotoxic effects in a 90-day study on rats and pigs, it increased the abundance of Lactobacillus and reduced the abundance of Escherichia-Shigella in the cecal digesta. It also decreased Streptococcus and the relative abundance of uncultured bacteria.
It has been proven that macleaya cordata extract is safe, has good appetising and growth-promoting effects on pigs and chickens, and can reduce diarrhea scores in growing pigs. In one study, 40 mg/kg of Macleaya cordata extract reduced the diarrhea score of growing piglets after 2 weeks on a basal diet. In one study, we investigated the effects of dietary Macleaya Cordata Extract supplementation on serum antioxidant activity and immune property in growing piglets. The results show that the MB group had higher (P 0.05) levels of serum IgM and IL-10 than those fed with the control diet. In addition, dietary supplementation with Macleaya Cordata Extract significantly enhanced intestinal barrier function in piglets. This was evidenced by a lower diarrhea score and increased volumes of claudin-1 and ZO-1.
Macleaya cordata extract is for broiler
The application of Macleaya cordata in poultry production has a variety of effects, such as increasing feed intake and weight gain of broilers, reducing feed/meat ratio, improving intestinal health, increasing dietary digestibility, enhancing body resistance, and improving laying rate of laying birds. Sanguinarine is a powerful cytotoxic agent that inhibits E. coli, Aeromonas hydrophila and Salmonella enteritidis microbial pathogens and also reduces ileal counts of E. coli and Salmonella enteritidis in broiler chickens. The feeding experiments of broilers showed that supplementation of 20 mg/kg Macleaya cordata extract can significantly increase the weight gain and decrease the feed/meat ratio of broilers, which is similar to that of avermectin (10 mg/kg). The relative weight and relative length of jejunum and ileum of broilers in Macleaya cordata extract group were significantly decreased, and the number of intestinal lactobacillus was significantly increased. Alaeldein M. Abudabos et al. reported that benzofidine alkaloids from Macleaya cordata could reduce intestinal damage of broilers challenged by Salmonella typhimurium and promote the recovery of growth performance and intestinal health.
Macleaya cordata extract is aquatic animal
It can kill a variety of parasites threatening aquatic animals, such as schistosoma, ring worm and small melon worm. It can promote growth, improve immunity and improve the health of aquatic animals, such as perch, red tilapia, koi, carp and prawn. Experimental studies on red tilapia showed that feed intake, weight gain and specific growth rate were significantly increased in red tilapia fed diets supplemented with sanguinarine and chelidonine compared with controls, while there were no significant differences in carcass composition, liver function and health status. Experiments on carp showed that sanguinarine and chelidonine could significantly improve the growth performance of carp, reduce the number of intestinal Escherichia coli, and enhance the resistance of Aeromonas hydrophila.
Macleaya cordata extract is for ruminant
Mammary inflammation can not only reduce the milk production performance of dairy cows, but also reduce the quality of dairy products. The functional components of borolu have good anti-inflammatory activity, which can improve milk mastitis and reduce the somatic cell count in milk. Estrada-Angulo A et al. ‘s study on dairy goats showed that the function components of boiling-back can improve the anti-stress ability of dairy goats and promote feed intake.
Macleaya cordata extract is a pesticide
Macleaya cordata extract is a natural pesticide, which can effectively inhibit and prevent mildewing, the germination of spores in animal feeds. It can also have a powerful effect against wheat aphids, such as Sitobion miscanthi, Sc. graminum, and Rhopalosiphum padi.
Macleaya cordata extract is highly beneficial for pigs, broilers, and fish, as it is a source of sanguinarine. Sanguinarine is a bioactive compound with many biological activities, such as antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, immunomodulatory and growth-promoting. It is a long-term additive veterinary drug for improving intestinal health, growth performance and immunity of livestock and poultry.
